dr-shazia-marriKARACHI: The Consul General of Russian Federation in Karachi, Andrey V. Demidov, met with the Sindh Minister Electric Power and Advisor Oil and Gas, Ms. Shazia Marri, here at her office on Saturday to discuss cooperation with the province in the energy sector.

They also discussed the recent visit of President Asif Ali Zardari to Russia and appreciated the marked progress in relations between the two countries with commitments made in various sectors such as energy, trade and agriculture.

A statement said that the meeting today was also a step towards furthering cooperation in the energy sector.

It said that Mr. Demidov asserted that the energy sector is a very important area of cooperation, especially in light of Pakistan's ongoing energy crisis.

He recognised that Pakistan holds great potential for energy generation and expressed interest in helping to explore and develop this potential.

"We appreciate support of global community and look forward to sharing of technical expertise and experience in the energy sector", Ms. Shazia Marri remarked on the occasion.

She pointed out that development of the energy sector is essential to meet the growing needs of the people not only presently but also for the future.

Ms. Shazia stated that the Sindh Government welcomes the foreign assistance and cooperation necessary to achieve this development and appreciates the offer of the Russian Consul General in this regard.

She pointed out that Government had recently been engaged in an understanding of cooperation with the Chinese for a power generating project in Sukkur for which necessary assessments were in process.

Shazia Marri and Russian Consul General both emphasized on the need to build and strengthen people to people contacts between both the countries.

"We must engage in a greater dialogue for peace, Pakistan continues to pay a heavy price for the world peace and needs to be understood", Marri stated.

She said that Pakistan was facing financial crisis because of the war against terrorism and not generating any revenue from areas recovering from terrorist activities.

"The Government of Pakistan continues to provide funds for social sector development in affected areas without any returns", Ms. Shazia explained.
