MULTAN: Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) has expressed its concern on misuse of cotton zone by allowing the setting up of sugar mills and cultivation of sugarcane.

Ihsan ul Haq, a senior member of the PCGA said that despite declaring cotton crop zones by the Punjab and Sindh governments the installation of new sugar mills continues which is shrinking the cotton crop area in major cotton zones of Rahim Yar Khan, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Ghotki, Khairpur Mirs and Nawab Shah and its apprehended that textile mills in future will have to import cotton after spending huge foreign exchange.

He further said that during the year 2010-11 the cotton crop area in Punjab was 6.7 million acres and in Sindh was nearby 2.0 million acres but now the cotton area has been gradually reduced to 5.7 million acres and 1.4 million acres respectively.

Ihsan ul Haq explained that according to the Cane Act the sugar mills must start up to 31st October in Sindh and up to 30th November in Punjab but sugar mills deliberately adopting tactics so that farmers may not be able to sow wheat after cutting of the sugarcane crop and this factor likely to force farmers to cultivate sugarcane again.
