ISLAMABAD: World Red Cross was observed on Wednesday with the theme "Together for Humanity".
The World Red Cross Day is celebrated to emphasize the role of its members and volunteers in saving lives and aiding the defenceless communities around the world.
World Red Cross Day is very significant for the Red Cross because it is also celebrated as the birthday of its founder Henri Dunant.
The global theme of this year is "Together for Humanity" is chosen to draw attention to the need and power of partnerships of organizations. It also highlights the need for stronger local and global associations in facing the growing humanitarian challenges.
On World Red Cross Day the American Red Cross give special focus on programs and activities to provide healthy and safe environment to the children around the world.
Today Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have the world's largest humanitarian network to provide relief.
It is carrying out its activities and is present in more than 170 countries. So it is the world's largest force of unpaidassistants helping some 233 million recipients every year.
National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies exist in almost every country of the world today. Presently, there are 186 National Societies, recognized by the ICRC.
The first Red Cross Day was celebrated on 8 May 1948. The official title of the day has changed over time, and it became "World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day" in 1984.
In his message on the occasion, President Asif Ali Zardari has assured Pakistan Red Crescent Society of every possible support of the government in its humanitarian endeavours.
He said the Day is reminder of the great value of selfless efforts, both an individual and communal levels, which can make the country and the world a better place to live.
