  • "I’m pleased to announce that I have joined the new global independent Oversight Board for Facebook and Instagram content," said Dad.

Pakistani internet activist has been appointed on Facebook’s new content oversight board, which will be able to overturn decisions by the company and Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg on which content should be allowed on Facebook and Instagram.

“As a longtime advocate of free expression, privacy, and digital rights, I’m pleased to announce that I have joined the new global independent Oversight Board for Facebook and Instagram content,” announced Dad in a series of tweets.

Dad is a Pakistani lawyer and internet activist who run the Digital Rights Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on cyber harassment, data protection, and free speech online in Pakistan and South Asia.

“I am looking forward to working with my fellow Board Members, who come from all over the world, and to start hearing cases later this year,” she added.

Dad was of the view that she truly believed “in the power, influence, and independence this Board will have on complex decisions that will be essential for safeguarding & promoting human rights, women’s rights and freedom of expression. The Board was designed to be as inclusive as possible.”

The oversight board will focus on a small slice of challenging content issues including hate speech and harassment and people's safety.
