Romanian central bank cuts key rate to record low 5.25pc

BUCHAREST: The Romanian central bank cut its key interest rate to a record low level of 5.25 percent from 5.50 percent on Thursday with effect from Friday.

The reduction had been expected by analysts against a background of easing inflation.

The central bank said that it would continue to monitor internal and external economic conditions so as to ensure price stability in the medium term and also financial stability.

In February prices rose by 0.64 percent from the level in January and by 2.59 percent on a 12-month comparison, data from the national statistics institute showed.

In 2011, inflation was 5.8 percent.
