Australia shares seen under pressure on China fears

Published Updated

australia-stocksSYDNEY: Australian shares could come under pressure on Wednesday on concerns about China's economic growth and resources demand weigh but easing euro zone debt worries and improving US economic data will offer some solace to investors.

Shares in retailer David Jones will be in focus. Australia's No.2 department store chain warned its full-year

earnings could fall as much as 40 percent as it invests in a costly overhaul of its strategy as sales languish.

Local share price index futures were flat at 4,275 and in line with the underlying S&P/ASX 200 index close. The benchmark fell 0.4 percent on Tuesday.

Concerns about the scale of China's economic slowdown resurfaced as BHP Billiton, the world's largest miner, said it was seeing signs of "flattening" iron ore demand from the country.

That sent copper to its sharpest decline in two weeks on Tuesday as the dollar strengthened and concerns about the scale of China's economic slowdown escalated, setting prices of the industrial metal back into a familiar range.
