TOKYO: Tokyo stocks opened 1.67 percent higher on Wednesday following an overnight surge on Wall Street.
The Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange opened up 165.04 points at 10,064.12.
Large-cap stocks would likely lead the market on Wednesday, Tachibana Securities operating officer Kenichi Hirano told Dow Jones Newswires.
US stocks took off Tuesday and the Dow zoomed past the 13,000 mark driven by soaring bank shares, sparked by JPMorgan Chase's announcement of a huge share buyback and dividend hike.
After a sharp surge higher in the final hour the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 1.68 percent to 13,177.68, the best closing level since December 2007.
The euro bought $1.3080 and 108.52 yen in early Asian trade on Wednesday, compared with $1.3075 and 108.38 yen in New York late Tuesday.
The dollar was at 82.96 yen against 82.90 yen in New York.
