FRANKFURT: Germany's DAX index of leading shares briefly broke the 7,000-point mark on Tuesday, the first time since August 2011.
Shares were higher across the board with only three of the 30 companies that make up the index seeing their stock decline. A better-than-expected investor confidence survey earlier Tuesday provided support for the market.
At the height of the eurozone debt crisis, the German market briefly dipped below 5,000 points but has since regained ground as the economy, Europe's biggest, has proved more resilient than others.
Data released earlier Tuesday showed German investor confidence surging to the highest level for 21 months in March.
The ZEW think tank's economic expectations index rose by 16.9 points in March to stand at plus 22.3 points, the highest level since June 2010, the organisation said in a statement.
It was the fourth month in a row that the widely watched sentiment barometer has risen.
Analysts had been pencilling in a much more modest increase to around just 10 points.
