JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday congratulated Vladimir Putin on his Russian presidential election victory, a statement from the premier's office said.
Netanyahu and Putin also discussed the situation in the Middle East, including Iran, in their telephone conversation, the statement added, saying Netanyahu invited Putin to Israel, and received an invitation to visit Moscow.
Putin secured more than 63 percent of the vote in Sunday's election, winning back the Russian presidency which he held for two terms from 2000 to 2008.
But some his rivals and several vote monitoring groups have cried foul and Communist Party candidate Gennady Zyuganov has refused to recognise the results.
Russia has longstanding commercial and military ties with Iran and has condemned sanctions imposed by the United States and European Union over Israeli and Western allegations that Tehran is seeking to develop nuclear weapons.
