ISLAMABAD: Minister for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination Aamer Mehmood Kiani Tuesday commended the progress in tackling polio and expressed his full confidence in the capacity to eradicate the disease.
The minister said this after receiving briefing on polio situation from Prime Minister Focal Person on Polio Babar Bin Atta.
He elaborated in detail the current virus epidemiology, immunity status and other challenges to achieve zero polio target in the country.
The prime minister focal person has given detailed briefing on the sub national immunization days observed from March 25 to 28. He also briefed the minister on upcoming National Immunization Days, which are starting from April 22. While giving briefing, the Prime Minister Focal Person said that the upcoming polio campaign was the best opportunity to eradicate virus.
"It's our utmost priority to ensure polio eradication from Pakistan," said the minister. He also stressed that in order to ensure a polio free future in Pakistan, all partners must continue working closely under strong government leadership, with no complacency.
Keeping in view the number of refusal and missed children in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Karachi and Quetta, it was agreed to start an aggressive public awareness campaign for April polio round.
The briefing was attended by Secretary National Health Services, DG National Health Services ministry and national team lead of WHO, UNICEF and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation ( BMFG).
