KARACHI: Mayor Karachi Wasim Akhtar has directed the Medical Superintendent of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and the senior Director Health and Medical Services to ensure release of junior doctors' pay immediately.
He said this while speaking in a high-level meeting at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital Committee Room on Tuesday, said a statement.
All employees of other departments drawing salaries against the posts of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital were also directed to report to the Human Resource Management (HRM) Department so these posts could be filled by technical staff.
Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Syed Saif-ur-Rehman, Financial Advisor Dr. Asghar Abbas Shaikh, senior director medical and health services, principal KMDC, M.S ASH and heads of Works, Finance and HRM departments of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) were also present on the occasion.
The meeting reviewed a 27-point agenda and discussed issuance of tenders for development works, disbursement of doctor's pay, payment of utility bills, repairing and maintenance of hospital machinery and equipment, upgradation of surgical department and improvement of security system in the hospital.
The Mayor and the Metropolitan Commissioner (MC) took stern notice of the protest of junior directors for non-payment of salary and instructed the officers concerned to solve the issue before going home today.
Afterwards the Mayor and the MC Karachi met with junior doctors and assured them the payment of their salaries in a day time.
Later, the Mayor said that all possible efforts were being made to bring improvement to the condition and performance of the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, however, the hospital management needed to take interest in these works.
In the meeting, it was also decided that the officers responsible for adjusting the salary of non-technical staff on the posts of ASH would have to face disciplinary action.
The Mayor also directed the hospital management to take immediate measures for bringing improvement to the overall working of the hospital.
