MONTPELLIER: President Nicolas Sarkozy confirmed Tuesday that wounded French reporter Edith Bouvier had crossed into Lebanon from the besieged Syrian city of Homs.
"I am very happy for her because she had multiple fractures. I am happy that this nightmare has come to an end," Sarkozy told reporters.
A Lebanese official earlier told AFP that Bouvier had arrived overnight in Lebanon from Homs, where she and British photographer Paul Conroy were injured in a rocket attack last week that killed two other Western reporters.
Sarkozy said her release had followed difficult talks, but did not elaborate.
"These were not very easy negotiations, really not," Sarkozy said during an election campaign stop in the southern city of Montpellier.
"Homs is not far from Lebanon, 20 or 30 kilometres (12 to 19 miles), but this was very difficult," Sarkozy said.
Sarkozy said he "did not have contact" with Bouvier but had been informed of her arrival in Lebanon.
