Tokyo stocks flat by noon

Published Updated

odayeTOKYO: Tokyo shares ended the morning session flat on Friday after jumping in and out of positive territory in the absence of fresh trading leads.

The Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange edged up 1.62 points to 9,597.19 while the Topix index of all first-section issues raised 0.22 percent or 1.85 points to 831.20.

"Since the (Nikkei) index is overbought in the short term, it will unlikely add further gains," said Ichiyoshi Investment Management chief fund manager Mitsushige Akino.

Better-than-expected US housing data and German business confidence figures Thursday will help support overall market sentiment, Daiwa Securities senior market analyst Yumi Nishimura said.

But she also said the Nikkei's upside may be limited after a recent rally.

Major exporters were among gainers on the yen's recent weakness. Sony was up 1.18 percent at 1,710 yen and Honda gained 1.0 percent to 3,040 yen.

The dollar rose to 80.14 yen and the euro to 107.11 yen in Tokyo early afternoon trade, from 79.98 yen and 106.94 yen in New York late Thursday.

Retailer Parco was bid-only at limit-up 782 yen after a report that bigger department store operator J. Front Retailing has decided to buy the company.

On Wall Street the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 0.36 percent at 12,984.69.
