solarBEIJING: A target has been set to lower photovoltaic solar power generating cost to 0.8 yuan ($0.13) per kilowatt hour (kWh) by 2015 and 0.6 yuan/kWh by 2020, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said.

The cost of photovoltaic power systems is targeted to fall to 13,000 yuan/kW by 2015 and decline to 10,000 yuan/kW by 2020. It did not provide the current solar power cost.

The National Development and Reform Commission, which controls many energy products prices, in August approved a unified grid feed-in price of 1 yuan/kWh for photovoltaic power plants that are put into use from this year, except solar power projects in Tibet which get a higher rate of 1.15 yuan/kWh.

The current on-grid prices for coal-fired power, the staple of China's electricity sources, fall largely in between 0.3 and 0.5 yuan/kWh.

The energy conversion rate of solar cell made from polysilicon is set to be improved to 19 percent by 2015 from the current 15-17 percent, and the efficiency for solar cell made from monocrystalline silicon will rise to 21 percent from the current 17-19 percent, the industry and information technology ministry's plan showed.

It aimed to improve the efficiency for solar cell made from thin-film amorphous silicon to 12 percent by 2015 from the current 6-8 percent.

The ministry also hoped to bolster leading polysilicon makers' production capacity to 50,000 tonnes per year by 2015 and cut power use in making each kilogramme of polysilicon to 120 kWh from the 160-180 kWh in 2010.

It wanted leading solar cell makers to have annual production capacity of 5 gigawatts each in 2015.
