The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday ordered to remove advertisements from the walls built for defence purposes in Karachi as the apex court disposed of all the applications about walls with ads in the city.
At its Karachi Registry, the larger bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar resumed the relevant case hearing in which representatives of cantonment boards and outdoor advertisement association appeared.
The cantonments boards officials told the court that walls inscribed with the advertisements have been demolished in the cantonment areas. Representatives of Faisal Cantonment Board said walls with ads in its jurisdiction have also been razed.
Representatives of outdoor advertisement associations pleaded for working out a mechanism for such walls as its members invested Rs 15 billion in it. CJP showed displeasure and said that court couldn't allow such activities to ruin Karachi. "You are responsible for your losses. Try some other business," he remarked.
CJP said whole city has been destroyed because boards are displayed on the poles. He said sign boards have defaced whole Karachi and court would not allow anyone to do this. "No advertisement wall should been seen and whoever violates the court order would have to pay the cost," he warned.
According to reports submitted by Manora, Malir, Korangi and Faisal cantonments in the court there are no walls with ads in their jurisdictions. CJP ordered that advertisements should also be removed from those walls, which have been built for defence purposes. Court also ordered to act upon the laws regarding the sign boards in letter and spirit.
