Expressing strong reservations over the current state of affairs of the Pakistan women's cricket team, former woman Test cricketer and one of the founding members of the country's women cricket team, Sharmeen Khan has called for introducing far-reaching reforms in the affairs of the women's cricket team, to bring laurel for the country in the field of women cricket.
"There exists enormous potential in women cricket but the affairs of women cricket right from team selection, training and team management are disappointing, which needs to be overhauled," Sharmeen said, adding: "Our women's cricket team cannot excel due to not appointing right person for the right job."
Talking to Business Recorder, Sharmeen Khan said that present cricket team management of women's cricket team must be replaced with dedicated team officials who have love and passion for the cricket. There is need to choose right people who may carry out extensive exercise for talent hunt and with proper grooming of new talent, women's cricket team can earn laurel for the country. She also criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for not paying due attention to promote the women's cricket.
She said, "The present management of the Pakistan women's cricket team is not capable to lead the team on winning track." She was of the view that the PCB would have to introduce radical changes in the affairs of women's cricket if it is determined to include our team in ICCI ranking.
Recently, Sharmeen said the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the women's ODI and T20 teams for the year but unfortunately the Pakistan women's cricket team has not managed to make a place in any of the categories, which is disappointing and a reason to evaluate the performance of our female cricketers.
Further, Sharmeen said the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) always has had a bias towards Pakistan's men's cricket team, while treating the women cricket team as a subordinate. The PCB must treat the two alike with the belief that women cricketers are equally capable of proving their mettle on the pitch, she asserted.
Sharmeen also asked the departments, corporations and other public sector enterprises to encourage women cricketers and give them jobs in their institutions so that women cricketers could be able to get economic empowerment and can excel in the game.
To a question, Sharmeen said that there is no harm in hiring the services of a psychiatrist to encourage women cricketers to have focused on the game. Further she said that League on the pattern of the PSL must also be introduced for women cricket.
