Rao Anwar: IG, FIA DG, others brief CJP in chamber

The Supreme Court on Monday said action will be taken against those who facilitated suspended SSP Rao Anwar in absconding from economic hub of the country. Rao was stopped from boarding a Dubai-bound flight at Islamabad's Benazir Bhutto International Airport on 23 Jan, 2018. However, the Sindh and Islamabad police did not take him into custody and since then the police are clueless about his whereabouts despite the Supreme Court had offered Rao protection if he surrenders.
A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, heard suo motu case on Naqeebullah Mehsud's killing. Family and friends of Naqeebullah Mehsud accused Malir SSP Rao Anwar of killing the youth in a fake encounter in Karachi after kidnapping. They said Mehsud was arrested by policemen in plain clothes on January 3 from Gul Sher Agha Hotel in Sohrab Goth and then murdered on January 12.
Appearing before the bench, Sindh Inspector General A D Khawaja apprised that he wanted to give briefing in the chamber on Karachi Airport footage of Rao Anwar while leaving the airport. The Chief Justice questioned who facilitated Rao at the Karachi Airport, adding who issued him boarding pass.
The Chief Justice then heard the IGP Sindh in his chamber at 1:30 pm along with the chief of Karachi Airport Security. After hearing them, the Chief Justice also summoned Chairman Nadra and Director General Federal Investigation Agency and heard them in the chamber.
Earlier, during the proceedings, Justice Saqib, once again, offered apex court protection to Rao Anwar. He said if Rao surrenders himself then the court would provide him security. He said the action will be taken against the facilitators. The governor State Bank of Pakistan informed the court that Rao Anwar had two bank accounts, which have been frozen. The Chief Justice remarked how salary is transferred in his bank account. The governor acknowledged transferring of salary but said Rao can't withdraw the salary from his account.
The Chief Justice inquired whether Chief Executive of Bahria Town Malik Riaz submitted an affidavit that Rao Anwar has not used his private jet. His counsel replied that he has filed the affidavit.
