ART FACTS: Tangible and intangible desires

Each artist had unique perception and inspiration which they expressed in their paintings in a four person show at Artscene Gallery, Karachi. The artists portrayed their views and experiences about different subjects using dissimilar mediums. The works mainly showed a blend of inspirations from the society and general admiration of nature.
Whenever a person left this world or a place in this world he/she always leaves a mark behind. This mark could be of physical nature or a non-tangible one just like moments floating in the memory. And artist Sana Saeed's paintings revolve around these traces which everybody left behind. For Sana all thoughts and experiences about a particular person are traces which are left behind by that person so others can remember him/her. Marks on walls, doors, stains on clothes, dust particles on different objects, all of these surfaces are collectors of time. An old piece of paper which was kept inside a book for ages or an old cloth lying around has countless stories to tell, it will show a glimpse of someone.
Through her paintings she dig deep inside the surface of neglected marks spread around us inside a home or outside in an office or restaurant or a garden. She tried to develop a conversation with these marks because to her these are not lifeless stains or objects; she sees them as the visual records of the people who were once present and now gone and out of sight but still in our memories.
She wanted to focus on the subject of 'nothingness' as life has become uncertain. By using different mediums of art such as painting, installations, photography, film and writing she wanted to record the presence of time which is embossed in countless surfaces around us. While Kiran Waseem's work was based on the idea of travelling where memory and imagination meet and separate.
She see travelling experience same as memories as a person travel from one place to another his/her memories pile up one over another and in a quiet moment one can remember and feel the experience of travelling once again. Her paintings were blurred just like dreams where reality and imagination meets. She seemed to be fascinated by the way our memories develop day by day and sometimes we blend these memories with our imagination and enjoyed that moments.
She loves her city and this can be easily seen in her paintings of various sites of the city from its roads to bridges and flyovers in a hazy night. And Eeman Khan's artworks talked about the vulnerability of women in our society. Our society has now become a place where women are seen as things on display, ornaments pruned to perfection.
Her women were stripped down, ghostly, confronting, fragile and yet having a sense of confidence. She tried to convey her message wrapped in layers so as nothing much is exposed and everyone understand her point of view. Her paintings unveiled the theme slowly when you take a closer look at them.
Khadija Rehman's fascination was with mortality and its tenuous connection with nature. Through her paintings, she aim to portray the inner struggle that people might face on a daily basis, struggles that we want to hide from the world for whatever reason, and demons that we keep safely tucked away. Every living being has to die one day means one who lives in this world had to decay also some day in this world. Who is alive must taste death one day.
