An accountability court on Friday permitted Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Dr Asim Hussain to travel abroad for treatment. The court exempted the PPP leader from appearing before it in future trial proceedings on medical grounds. The Interior Ministry had earlier removed the name of Dr Asim from the Exit Control List (ECL) in compliance with the order of the apex court.
Dr Asim had approached the Supreme Court calling for his name to be stricken off the no-fly list. The federal authorities had been dragging their feet to remove his name from the ECL as his name was removed only after the PPP leader filed an application in the apex court seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against them for flouting court orders.
Dr Asim had taken interior secretary and additional secretary to the court for flouting its order that directed them to remove his name from the no-fly list. On November 16, the apex court granted Dr Asim permission to travel abroad on the medical grounds. It directed the authorities concerned to remove his name from the ECL.
