State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb on Monday announced to launch Radio Pakistan internship program for youth. Addressing a ceremony held to mark World Radio Day here, she said the Radio Pakistan is playing a critical role in the development of the country and the government has planned to further take advantages of the radio broadcasting services.
She said that it is a credible medium engaged in promotion of positive image of the country world-wide and the government will further take advantage of the Radio Pakistan to create national harmony across the provinces. She said Radio Pakistan began its journey with the creation of Pakistan and since then has been instrumental in boosting morale of the nation and raising a ray of hope through thick and thin. She said be it natural disasters or wars, Radio played its role well during critical junctures of Pakistan's history.
She announced the launch of one-year communication campaign to celebrate the seventy years of Pakistan and Radio Pakistan. The minister said that Radio Pakistan will also start "Pakistan This Week" programme to highlight the development work, including the CPEC and infrastructure projects. The youth will also be engaged in the programme. Marriyum Aurangzeb said that a weekly programme titled 'National Heritage and Culture of Pakistan' is also being started to acquaint the youth with the rich culture and heritage of the country.
She suggested that the next year the world Radio Day should be organised at an educational institution so that the youth could also be engaged in such events. The minister said that a weekly programme will also be launched in order to raise awareness about the sustainable development goals and framework of the Vision 2025. She paid tribute to all those who remained associated with Radio Pakistan in different capacities and played their part in the process of nation building.
Marriyum particularly referred to the contribution of Radio Pakistan in motivating the youth to engage in positive pursuits and acknowledged the role played by the private media but pointed out that Radio reached out to those as well who had no access to any kind of information medium, especially in the remote and far-flung areas of the country.
The minister said Radio Pakistan has been complementing efforts of the government towards realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and efforts for provision of health, education and infrastructure facilities to the masses. It also contributed a lot towards the goals of gender equality and women empowerment and is now projecting different aspects of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Speaking on the occasion, Director General Radio Pakistan Saba Mohsin Raza said Radio Pakistan has been rendering exemplary services for the masses, adding that even in the era of advanced technology it is the source of credible news and information. UN Resident Co-ordinator in Pakistan, Neil Bohne said, "Radio has the credit of reaching every nook and corner of the world and enables bridging the differences that arise out of vast diversity on the face of the earth".
Director UN Information Centre in Islamabad, Vittorio Cammarota said, "Radio Pakistan has made a salutary contribution in augmenting the linkages between the policy makers and the masses towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals". Later, Dutch Ambassador to Pakistan Jeannette Seppen in her address highlighted the importance of radio for youth and stressed the need for enhanced youth engagement and awareness through radio. Deputy Head of Mission, European Union Delegation to Pakistan, Anne Marchal highlighted the importance of community radio stations as a podium for the local community to raise their voices.
