Four people including three female students of Federal Urdu University (Science Campus) were killed while five others were injured when a speeding passenger bus overturned at University Road near Bait-ul-Mukarram Masque, here on Thursday. Police and eyewitnesses said the incident occurred due to reckless driving as the driver was recklessly driving of PE-4042, Data Coach., resulting loss of precious human lives. The driver managed to flee from the scene after the incident while the contractor succumbed to his wounds.
Following the incident, police and rescue officials reached at the scene and moved the injured and bodies to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) for treatment and medico-legal formalities respectively. This is not a rare case, a number of people fall victim of reckless driving on the city roads daily. Last week, two more Urdu University female students were hit by a speedy bus on the same road.
Citizens alleged that majority of the officials deputed on the roads to regulate traffic system, are nothing to do with public service but to commit crime under legal cover with taking bribe from the commuters at various pretexts. "Fifty percent of traffic related problems can be solved at once, if the police started performing duties with professional honesty." Muhamamad Sajid, an Urdu university student said.
The Sindh Transport minister Nasir Shah said the unfortunate incident occurred due to negligence of the bus driver. "Directions have been issued for his immediate arrest. The authorities were also initiating enquiries against the bus owner who was employed an untrained driver." he told a local TV news channel.
Mayor Karachi Waseem Akhtar visited the crime scene. Taking to media persons on the occasion, he said the mishap occurred due to overloading and over speeding of the bus. He deplored that the city development projects were executed without proper planning, causing immense hardships to citizens. "The provincial transport minister and home minister should have been here on the crime place right now, instead of me."
"Where is the Sindh Government which has powers and resources" he questioned.
DIG Traffic Ejaz Ahmad Shaikh said police have initiated actions to arrest the driver. President All Karachi Transport Ittehad (AKTI) Irshad Bukhari also said the accused should be dealt in accordance with the law. SHO Aziz Bhatti police station Raheem Chandio toldBusiness Recorder that identifications of deceased were ascertained as Amna , Kiran, Rabia and Saifullah, the contractor of ill-fated bus.
