While debate is on to appoint new skippers for ODI & Test squad of Team Pakistan, former Pakistani cricketers have come up with divergent views to appoint new skippers for ODI and Test squad. Some of the cricketers, however, said the real issue is in the PCB instead of choosing skipper.
Former cricketer Sikander Bakht said the Prime Minister who is patron of PCB must intervene to streamline the affairs of the PCB. "The affairs of PCB are being run by those who are not aware about the game of cricket." Chairman PCB Shaharyar M. Khan has decided to hold a round table conference of current and former Test players in Lahore on March 6 and 7, 2017 in order to seek their views on the improvement of Pakistan national and junior team's performance.
A selected number of Test players will be invited to attend the conference which will be co-chaired by Inzamam ul Haq, Chief selector and Mudassar Nazar, Director Academies. Mr. Mushtaq Ahmed Head coach, NCA will be the Coordinator of the conference.
The invitations would be extended to Imran Khan, Misbah ul Haq, Younus Khan, Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram, Zaheer Abbas, Wasim Bari, Shoaib Akhtar, Aamir Sohail, Javed Miandad, Rashid Latif, Ramiz Raja, Moin Khan, Abdul Qadir, Aaqib Javed, Iqbal Qasim, Bazid Khan, Saeed Ajmal and several others. Chairmen of committees and BoG members will also be invited to attend, a PCB spokesman said.
The main items of the agenda would be improving team performance, domestic structure, improvement of pitches, coaching of National and junior teams, encouraging of foreign teams to tour Pakistan.
Former captain Wasim Akram said that having two, three captains don't suit our cricketing culture. "Sarfraz should be the captain now. There is no other option available", he said. Former cricketer Shoaib Akhtar has said that Babar Azam should be made Test captain of Pakistan team. "Time has come to move on, we should invest in our future and make Babar Test captain, he said, adding: "Let it be known that Babar Azam is just 22-year-old and has excelled in all formats of the game at very early stage of his career."
Former batsman Ramiz Raja also backed Sarfraz as the best choice for captaining the ODI side. Former batsman Mohammad Yousuf said Sarfraz is a performer and fighter and he should be given the responsibility. "Whoever made Azhar Ali the ODI captain should be held accountable," he said. Former all-rounder Abdul Razzaq believes only captaincy should not be blamed for defeat in the series against Australia saying Pakistan team lacks talent. "No one should blame captaincy for the recent defeats." Captaincy would work only if you have a good talented team with good all-rounders and players with skills. Add to it the conditions in Australia are very hard and that's why we could not perform well," Razzaq said.
