Speakers have said that around 11 percent people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were drug users while Ice drug is increasing day by day among the youth. This was shared in a programme organised at Peshawar Press Club by Dost Welfare Foundation and Social Welfare Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while addressing at a news conference on Wednesday.
Director Social Welfare Department Muhmmad Naeem said that the KP government makes serious effort to eradicate the menace of drug and for this purpose provincial government released Rs 150 million grants to Dost Welfare Foundation. He further said that Social Welfare Department signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Dost Welfare Foundation in 2014 while the project closed date is June 2017.
He added that Social Welfare Department with other government and semi government organisations working on drug users, adding that it is the responsibility of all individuals to fight for the menace of drug in the society.
Tariq Mahmood, Programme Manager at Dost Welfare Foundation said that the organisation is working since 2014 and around 700 drug users were provided treatment and rehabilitation facilities. He informed that around five rehabilitation centre were functional only in Peshawar for the drug users. He informed that most of the drug users were HIV patients and around 182 HIV positive patients were referred to Hayatabad Medical Complex where the patients were providing treatment.
He added that only in Peshawar they were admitted around 46 patients in a single day, adding that the Ice drug increasing day by day among the youth and the government should take immediate steps to eradicate this menace. Tariq Mahmood informed that drug users were increasing day by day in KP because the flow of drug from Afghanistan is continuously imported which should be stopped on Pak-Afghan border.
