Due to heavy snowfall, Lowari Tunnel has been closed for all sorts of vehicular traffic leaving the largest district Chitral cut-off from the rest of country. The tunnel will remain open for traffic on Friday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.
Chairman Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Latif-ur-Rehman said that there were around 30 passenger vehicles, which also carrying women and children were stranded due to heavy snow fall and a request has been made to the tunnel authorities to allow their passage. Otherwise the land route was completely closed.
He said that due to heavy snowfall communication system has been damaged in the landlocked district and most of the link roads including Lowari tunnel has been closed for all types of vehicular transportation. He also cautioned the people against travelling on the roads leading to Chitral as heavy snowfall had made them vulnerable for motorists. He said the Loweri Tunnel will be opened only on Friday.
District Chitral which usually does not receive snow in this month was wrapping white shawl on early Sunday.
