A Chinese state-owned construction company will build the Qatar 2022 World Cup final stadium in a joint venture, Qatar's World Cup organisers said Monday. The China Railway Construction Corporation Limited and Qatari contractor HBK Contracting Co. W.L.L. have won the bidding process to build the stadium designed by award-winning British architect Norman Foster's firm, Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy said.
The venue, which will host the 2022 World Cup final, will be built at Lusail City 20km (12 miles) north of Doha, the committee said. "We are delighted to award the main contract for Lusail Stadium to HBK and CRCC as a joint venture," the committee's secretary general Hassan Al Thawadi said.
"Lusail Stadium will be the centre-piece of our tournament in 2022, and post tournament will become an integral part of the community in Lusail City in the legacy phase," he added. Foster and Partners have drawn up the design for the circular 80,000 seater super-stadium, and the builders are expected to swiftly begin work on the plot while the design for the stadium is due to be revealed in early 2017. "We are building a venue which will become an internationally-recognisable landmark, as the host venue for the opening and final matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup," said Mubarak Al-Khulaifi, the committee's project director for the stadium.
