The provincial government told the Lahore High Court on Thursday that 90 percent composition of the Punjab University's Senate had been completed after governor/chancellor notified his 5 nominees. Assistant Advocate General Ahmad Hassan presented before the court a notification issued by Punjab Governor Rafiq Rajwana and told that the governor in capacity of the chancellor, has notified his nominees. The nominees include poet Sughra Sadaf, scholar Naveed Shahzad, journalist Sohail Warraich, columnist Sofia Bedar and scientist Dr Naveed Ahmad Malik.
PU legal advisor Awais Khalid stated that the remaining 20 members of the Senate were required to be nominated by the Punjab Assembly Speaker. However, he said legislation was needed for the nomination of the MPAs as university's senate members. Functioning of the senate was essential for the legislation, he added. Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah disposing of the petition filed by Professor Javed Shami and allowed the senate to start its functions and complete the required legislation within two months.
