Young doctors staged a sit-in in front of Chief Minister's Secretariat on Tuesday to protest against the suspension and transfers of their colleagues and also pressed the government for acceptance of their demands. Due to the protest, traffic on the Mall Road and other adjoining roads remained suspended for many hours. The closure of roads caused inconvenience for the people who stuck in traffic for hours.
The participants of the protest also raised slogans for acceptance of their demands. Apart from this, patients approaching different hospitals in the city had to face great difficulties as OPD and indoor services remained suspended on Tuesday. Closure of OPDs on the call of the Young Doctors Association (YDA) forced many patients to visit costly private healthcare centres for treatment.
The closure of OPDs also affected service delivery at other departments as the protesting doctors stayed away from their duties. Neither any representative of the provincial Health department nor any other government official approached the protesting doctors for negotiations to convince them to resume their duties at the OPDs. On the other hand, YDA office-bearers claimed that young doctors withdrew services only from the OPDs and continued performing duties in emergency, indoor and operation theatres. They claimed that doctors were performing their duties at hospitals as usual, and no operations were postponed. Nurses and paramedics also joined the protest of young doctors which aggravated the situation for people.
