Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) is a leading construction firm which combines engineering excellence with the version and dedication to deliver memorable mega projects. Established in 1966 " Striving for Excellence" is the motto that FWO stands for and lives by.
For the last 46 years, FWO has successfully paved the way to a brighter future for Pakistan, connecting far-flung inaccessible rural areas and vulnerable communities with the developed world of opportunities. FWO is a pioneer in extensive development of communication infrastructures, power projects and irrigation system. Employing over 15,000 personnel, FWO Headquarters is located in Rawalpindi with five groups Headquarters in Abbottabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, Karachi and Quetta other than private subsidiaries working across Pakistan.
Communication Infrastructure
Highways/Roads/ Railways are modern gateway to economic empowerment. Perhaps no other project better symbolises FWO achievements than monumental Karakoram Highway which was recommended to be recognised as 8th wonder of the world. This highway has great strategic and economical importance as it links Pakistan with China.
A few other highways include Makran Coastal Highway, completed in 2006 in which has now been extended till Iran Boarder. Lahore-Faisalabad dual carriageway was completed in record 6 months time. The South bound two lane Lyari Expressway was completed by FWO in 2008 and has provided commuters a safe and quick route from interior of Karachi.
FATA area has always been neglected part of Pakistan but now mushroom of communication infrastructure will bring a definite change in socio-economic conditions of the people of that area. Tank-Gomal-Tanai-Wana, Tank-Jandola-Makeen and Wana - Angoor Adda roads have been completed by FWO which have transformed the life style of the people. Other roads in the area are Wana - Shakai - Makeen road. Miranshah - Razmak - Makeen, Bannu-Miranshah road linking Pakistan with Afghanistan and Central Asian states, Wana-Shakai-Makeen road.
Contract of dualization of 246 Km Railway Track Khanewal-Raiwind section was awarded to FWO which was completed in May 2011. Dualization of Railway Track from Lodhran to Khanewal (119 Km) was also carried out by FWO in 2003.
Bridges/Flyovers
FWO has extremely efficient and trained manpower with latest machinery and equipment for the construction of concrete bridges. To name a few Rahimabad Flyover connecting Ammar Chowk with Islamabad Airport, Shalimar Flyover, Jandola Bridge.etc. In Swat FWO has launched a UK origin steel deck bridge comprising of Delta Units. A class 70 328 m long and 9.5 m wide bridge is first of its kind to be launched in Pakistan.
DAMS
Development and growth of Pakistan is dependent on proper management of natural resources and efficient energy production. FWO undertook the rehabilitation of Sukkhur Barrage in 2005, located on River Indus. It has command area of 8.4 million acres, world's largest unified irrigation system. In 1994, FWO undertook the challenge of extending the Mangala Electric Power Station thus increasing its power generation capacity by 25%. In FATA, Gomal Zam Dam is a project of critical national interest as it will bring great prosperity to the region. It has three components water storage, power generation and irrigation system. 163,000 acres of barren land in Tank district is to be irrigated and 17.4 megawatts of electricity will be produced through Gomal Zam.Dam.
No limited to hydroelectric power plants, FWO proceeded to carryout major construction work on the Thermal Power Station in Muzaffargarh and a similar power station in Jamshoro.
Tunnels/Avalanche Shelters/Underpasses
FWO completed Lakpass tunnel in Mastung district of Balochistan in 2008. In FATA, FWO has recently completed Jandola Tunnel on Tank Jandola-Makeen road. The construction of these tunnels is facilitating trade activity inside the country and also with Afghanistan / Central Asian States. Construction of Avalanche shelters on Tank-Jandhola-Makeen road and Kohala-Muzzaffarabad-Chakothi road was a unique idea because it was never carried out before, in Pakistan. Underpass near General Bus Stand, Multan was also constructed by FWO.
Airports/Airfields
FWO also specialises in construction of airfields and has completed many runways and airstrips across Pakistan. At present FWO is working on new Benazir Bhutto International Airport Islamabad.
Growing population requires structural development, FWO has undertaken major infrastructural development works. The development work of NUST campus sector H-12 Islamabad, DHA Lahore and infrastructure work on Port Qasim Authority Industrial Zone are a few examples.
Role in Rehabilitation after Disaster
In the last 10 years, Pakistan has been severely affected by natural disasters such as earthquake in 2005, floods in 2010 & 2011 and Attabad Lake disaster where FWO responded immediately. Quick and prompt action by FWO in mobilising its maximum resources to meet the challenges in case of Giari (Siachin) is appreciated at highest level. Apart from delivering timely mega projects FWO has been at the helm of resorting and responding to damages inflicted by natural disasters/ calamities.
International Projects
In 1991, FWO participated in reconstruction phase of Kuwait after the Gulf War. In 2006 a road from Torkham to Jalalabad was constructed by FWO in Afghanistan.
FWO, today is one of the best engineering firms of Pakistan, capable of efficiently implementing any construction assignment within or outside Pakistan. The volume of FWO's ongoing projects stand over $1.84 billion.
