Nationalist parties in Sindh have been washed away in the May 11 elections, a clear indication that they have been crying wolf all these years, playing with the sentiments of poor illiterate people in rural Sindh without delivering anything to them.
Big names like Syed Jalal Mehmood Shah, Head of Sindh United Party (SUP), three candidates of Dr Qadir Magsi's Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party (STP) and Ayaz Latif Palijo of Qaumi Awami Tehreek (QAT) suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of PPPP candidates exposing them before the public as minions.
As a matter of fact the 10-party alliance which was formed just before the elections to contest jointly proved a total flop. The alliance included: PML (F), PML (N), JI, JUI (F), JUP, Pakistan Sunni Tehrik (PST), QAT, SUP, STP and NPP. Amir Buksh Bhutto elder son of Mumtaz Ali Bhutto who had formed Sindh National Front (SNF) but had merged it with PML (N) days before the elections also lost against PPPP candidate Mohammad Ali Bhutto in Larkana.
Mohammad Ali Bhutto was not PPPPs' genuine worker but he is an ordinary family member of Benazir Bhutto, local political observers are claiming that Amir Bux Bhutto had to give tough time to PPPP contester but it proved wrong as Amir Bux lost the seat. The elimination of nationalist parties in the recent election indicates that these are basically pressure groups, rather organised parties, with no significant following among the people of Sindh.
All the seven winners in the provincial assembly belong to PML (F) headed by Pir Syed Sibghatullah Shah Rashdi alias Pir Pagara. It has been observed that nationalist parties in Sindh have been formed only to benefit their leaders, criminally ignoring poor people who look up to them for relief. Since nationalists have been rejected by the people, it would be wise if they merge with mainstream parties and play their role at national level.
Ayaz Latif Palijo who got defeat from PPPP's Jam Khan Shoro on PS-47 of Qasimabad, Hyderabad district, was considered as wining candidate by the local political observers as Shoro was newcomer in PPPP and has been allocated ticket on the wish of Syed Owais Muzaffar Tappi.
Even, PPPP's local people were not accepting Shoro as ticket holder and few had submitted nomination forms against the party candidate but Jam Khan Shoro won the seat and defeated Ayaz Palijo. STP Chairman Dr Qadir Magsi had also submitted nomination papers on same seat and he was expecting the 10-party ticket as a candidate but Ayaz lobbied for himself and he succeeded to get the ticket and Magsi had withdrew in protest.
Syed Jalal Mehmood Shah, who is heading his political party SUP and is also Chairman of Sindh Bachayo Committee, has got defeat from PPPP's contesters on two seats of District Jamshoro. Jamshoro which is stronghold of PPPP for last 30 years but is actually politically controlled by Malik Asad Sikandar, known as "King of Kohistan."
When President Asif Zardari was released from prison and started his visit from Karachi to Lahore, Malik Asad's personal guards had kept him secure till the border of Sindh. Syed Jalal Mehmood Shah was major rival of Malik Asad Sikandar on National Assembly and Dr Sikandar Shoro on provincial seat of Jamshoro district. Jalal was considered as tough competitor of only Dr Shoro but he suffered defeat from him as well.
Syed Zain Shah, cousin of Jalal Shah and another grandson of GM Syed has received defeat from PPPP's Ghulam Qadir Chandio on provincial seat of Benazirabad. Zain, grandson founder of Jeay Sindh Movement was emerged as major rival of Chandio. He had ticket of SUP and was fully supported by 10-party-alliance.
Before entering into parliamentary politics, Shah was the Chairman of Jeay Sindh Mahaz (faction of Jeay Sindh Movement), when Jalal Mehmood Shah established SUP, Zain had merged his nationalist party in it. Since then, Zain Shah is contesting elections. In 2008, he also fought election on same seat but was defeated by same PPPP candidate Ghulam Qadir Chandio.
Dr Qadir Magsi who did not contest election himself but his party's four candidates fought May-11 polls from various districts and faced defeat from the PPPP candidates. The local political observers are saying that although all nationalist parties, PML-F, PML-N and others sitting in 10-party electoral alliance had launched movement against PPPP and MQM in the name of "division of Sindh with Peoples Local Government Act 2012" but Sindhi people supported PPPP and MQM and succeeded candidates of both parties instead of voting nationalist and other parties sitting in the alliance.
