Witnesses record statements against Daniyal Aziz in contempt case

Contempt case hearing against Federal Minister for Privatization Daniyal Aziz was resumed on Friday by the Supreme Court (SC) as two prosecution witnesses recorded their statements.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed heard the testimonies of two witnesses, Haji Adam Khan, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) director general and Dunya News reporter Sajid Hussain Chaudhry.

After their statements, Aziz’s counsel Ali Raza cross-examined the testimonies of the witnesses. Clippings of Aziz's media talk was also shown in court. Raza sought time to prepare his reply and the hearing was adjourned till April 16.

Apex court indicts Daniyal Aziz for contempt of court

The SC indicted Aziz on March 13 over his anti-judiciary remarks. Aziz was indicted under Article 204 of the country’s constitution. The constitutions states that the person be punished if he has committed contempt of court. However, the minister pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Aziz had been issued a show cause notice by the SC on February 19. On February 2, the SC had taken a suo motu notice against Aziz’s contemptuous remarks and had summoned him to the top court.
