ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court Tuesday disposed of a case pertaining to quality and price of stents used in the treatment of cardiac related diseases.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Umar Ata Bandial and Justice Ijazul Ahsan wrapped up the substandard medical stents case and directed the government and private hospitals to submit report after implementing the recommendations of committee within three months.

During the course of proceedings, Azhar Kiani, head of Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology, informed the court that the stents would be made available to the heart patients in the range of Rs 60,000 to Rs 100,000.

The bench directed that steps should also be taken to curtail expenditure on dialysis.

The CJP commended the report of the committee and termed the recommendations quite ‘comprehensive’. He directed the private and government hospitals to submit their report after 90 days to SC Registrar.

The chief justice inquired that what would be done for the medicines being made for heart patients. The court would check the companies, which were making fake medicines, he added.

Later, the court sought implementation report in three months and disposed of the case.
