TOKYO: Japan’s Nikkei share gauge rose on Wednesday, helped by strong earnings from SK Hynix and renewed optimism in the AI sector.
The benchmark tech-heavy Nikkei 225 advanced 1.08 percent to close at 63,954.19, gaining for a second straight day. The broader Topix slipped 0.14 percent to 3,991.71.
South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix announced shareholder returns of about USD75 billion after reporting a more-than-seven-fold rise in quarterly profit. South Korea’s KOSPI gauge of shares surged 6.63 percent.
That came after overnight gains in the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq, with technology leading sector gains.
Meta Platforms increased its equity fundraising to USD97.5 billion to fund AI expansion, with Nvidia and AMD committing to the offering.
There were 85 advancers on the Nikkei 225 against 139 decliners, but the index’s heavy weighting in tech allowed it to end the day higher.
