KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Local Government Nasir Hussain Shah has said that climate change has become a serious challenge for Pakistan’s economy, agriculture, urban population, infrastructure and public well-being.
He emphasised that addressing this challenge requires not only government efforts but also private sector investment, modern technology and the promotion of practical, viable projects.
He said Sindh offers significant investment opportunities in clean energy, water management, waste disposal, agriculture and infrastructure. With effective planning, these opportunities can be transformed into a greener economy capable of withstanding climate-related risks.
He expressed these views while addressing the Investor Roadshow 2026 organised under the Climate Finance Accelerator.
The British Deputy High Commissioner, Chairman Planning and Development Najam Ahmed Shah, and representatives of various companies also addressed the event.
Nasir Shah said the Sindh government was playing an active role in addressing the impacts of climate change. However, he stressed that the challenge could not be tackled by the government alone, particularly given the limitations of public resources. Attracting private investment requires effective strategies, sound decision-making and sustained efforts, he added.
He said climate change was not merely an environmental issue for Pakistan but was also causing serious economic damage. Its impacts were being felt across agricultural fields, cities, infrastructure and people’s lives. He emphasised that new ideas, modern technology and investment were essential to steering the country towards a greener and more resilient economy.
He further stated that companies operating in Pakistan were contributing to the development of the country’s climate-focused economy. Although Sindh faced significant climate-related risks, the province had considerable potential for investment in clean energy, water management, waste management, agriculture and infrastructure.
Shah stressed that translating climate-related initiatives into practical and investment-ready projects was an urgent priority. He called for stronger cooperation between the public and private sectors to mobilize investment and promote sustainable, climate-resilient development.
