LAHORE: The president of the Punjab University (PU) Academic Staff Association (ASA), Dr Amjad Abbas Magsi, has called for an immediate, impartial and transparent inquiry into allegations of illegal appointments and promotions at the university, saying it is necessary to establish the facts and uphold justice and the rule of law.
In a statement, Dr Magsi said the association has complete respect for constitutional and democratic institutions. He welcomed the notice taken by the Punjab Assembly’s Standing Committee on Higher Education and its directive for a transparent inquiry, calling it a commendable step. He noted that the Lahore High Court had earlier ordered an inquiry into the controversial appointments, reflecting the seriousness of the matter.
Dr Magsi made the following demands which includes the inquiry committee should review the relevant rules and regulations impartially and honestly. The complete record of all appointments and promotions, including advertisements, selection board proceedings and minutes, should be thoroughly examined. The inquiry should be completed without any pressure, in accordance with the law and the University Act and Statutes, and its report should be made public.
“Punjab University is our alma mater, and protecting its reputation is our collective responsibility,” he said. He added that illegal appointments not only undermine merit but also harm the institution’s academic standards and the morale of teachers.
If the allegations are proven, he said, those responsible should be identified and action taken according to the law. If they are found to be baseless, the institution’s reputation should be restored.
Dr Magsi expressed hope that the university administration would bring the inquiry to its logical conclusion at the earliest.
Separately, affectees of Punjab University’s Town III housing project have welcomed the Standing Committee’s orders for the suspension of Dr Azhar Naeem and Dr Kamran Abid.
Dr Khurram Shehzad, president of the Town III Affectees, said the Lahore High Court had also directed the university to conduct an inquiry into the alleged illegal appointment of Dr Kamran Abid. He called for the immediate completion of investigations into the alleged illegal appointments and promotions of both professors and urged the authorities to establish the facts.
