Pakistan discusses reforms with MSCI, Deutsche Bank

  • Discussions focused on MSCI’s classification criteria and foreign investors’ concerns
Published Updated

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb met representatives of Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) and Deutsche Bank on the sidelines of the World Bank Group-IMF Annual Meetings 2026 in Bangkok to discuss Pakistan’s capital market reforms, financing options and investment prospects.

At the meeting with MSCI, attended by the governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Aurangzeb highlighted improvements in Pakistan’s economic indicators and stock market participation. Discussions focused on MSCI’s classification criteria and foreign investors’ concerns regarding foreign exchange, prefunding, hedging and pooled investments.

The meeting also discussed repatriation arrangements through Special Convertible Rupee Accounts (SCRAs) and expanded access to Roshan Digital Accounts. Participants agreed on technical follow-up to address operational concerns and improve market accessibility.

In a separate meeting with Deutsche Bank representatives, Aurangzeb highlighted improvements in macroeconomic stability, foreign exchange reserves, sovereign ratings and investor confidence. He also outlined Pakistan’s return to international capital markets through private placements, Panda bonds and Eurobonds.

The minister said Pakistan was exploring ways to diversify its financing sources, including Sukuk, rupee-denominated bonds settled in dollars and the possible tokenisation of Eurobonds.

He appreciated Deutsche Bank’s longstanding presence in Pakistan and encouraged greater corporate engagement and support for foreign portfolio investment. Discussions also covered debt management, currency diversification and investor outreach in Europe and other international markets.

Aurangzeb welcomed Deutsche Bank’s interest in providing strategic advisory support for privatisation, including that of power distribution companies and major airports.

Since we are discussing financing and more financing to ensure never ending loans, isn't it time to review life-threatening economy for Pakistanis, why's our loan-profile little to show for better?
