Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Salman Akram Raja on Monday demanded that the party leaders and doctors should be given access to PTI founder Imran Khan for continuation of political dialogue with the government, saying Imran’s involvement was essential to resolving the deadlock between the two sides.
Speaking at a press conference at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House in Islamabad, Raja said Imran was capable of bridging what he described as the growing gap between the state and the people.
“Imran Khan is very important for us and we had every right to seek his opinion, but it was not allowed,” Raja said.
Explaining the reasons for the failure of talks between the government and the PTI-led opposition, Raja said two issues remained central to the party: Imran Khan’s health and a strategy to address terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He said the opposition had asked the government to give importance to the consensus reached at a jirga held in the KP Assembly, which was attended by representatives of all political parties.
Raja said the PTI had also proposed forming a medical board that would include Imran’s personal physician Dr Faisal Sultan and his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, to allow consultation regarding his health.
“We only asked that the Supreme Court’s order be implemented,” he said, adding that the proposal was ultimately rejected at 2:40am.
“If there is no agreement on these two key issues — personal doctors and the strategy regarding terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — then agreement on a hundred other matters has no significance,” Raja said.
He said the two issues were of “utmost importance” to the PTI: Imran Khan’s health and the strategy for dealing with the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Raja also said the government’s negotiating team had informed the PTI delegation that Imran’s blood pressure had risen significantly four to five weeks earlier, prompting the authorities to bring a doctor from London who, according to the government team, managed to bring it under control with difficulty.
