Govt to spend Rs25bn a month on fuel relief scheme: petroleum minister

Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik on Monday said that the government will provide Rs25 billion per month for the fuel relief scheme.

“Regardless of scarcity of resources, the government has tried to protect the weak segments of the society,” the minister said this while briefing journalists in Islamabad regarding the newly introduced petrol relief scheme by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He was flanked by Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar and Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja.

In her remarks, Shaza said that a simplified registration procedure, with minimum checks and balances, has been introduced to ensure that the maximum number of eligible people can benefit from the prime minister’s fuel relief scheme.

She said the scheme is targeted at users of two- and three-wheelers, as well as vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc. Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries will receive a fuel subsidy of Rs100 per litre.

Sharing details of the registration process, the IT minister said eligible applicants can register from home by sending their CNIC number, plate number, the first letter of their province, and the vehicle’s registration date to 9771 via a text message. “This will complete the registration process,” she added.

She said before visiting a petrol station, registered beneficiaries will need to send TOK to 9771 to receive a fuel relief token. The fuel station will then provide the subsidised fuel upon seeing the token number.

Shaza said that motorcycle users will be able to avail petrol subsidy once a week, while car users can receive the subsidy once every 10 days. The subsidy will be provided through a token for 10 litres of petrol for cars and 5 litres for motorcycles, she maintained.

The information minister said that this fuel relief scheme is meant for the deserving people in order to reduce their burden in the current situation. “All options will be used to ensure greater awareness about the scheme,” he stated.
