Imran Khan moved back to Adiala Jail after medical check-up at PIMS: Tarar
- Says PTI founder was found to be healthy
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has said that PTI founder Imran Khan was found to be in good health following a medical examination conducted at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
In a post on X, Tarar said Imran Khan was brought to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) due to security concerns, claiming that a security situation had developed around the route to Shifa International Hospital and outside the facility because of the presence of PTI workers.
The information minister said Imran’s medical examination was conducted during the night between August 20 and 21 in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directives and under appropriate security arrangements.
He said a team of specialist doctors, including an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician, carried out the examination. Doctors from Shifa International Hospital were also present during the medical assessment.
“According to the medical examination, the PTI founder was found to be healthy,” Tarar said.
The minister added that Imran Khan had previously been provided medical facilities and would continue to receive medical care whenever required.
Earlier, reports had emerged that Imran Khan was transferred from Adiala Jail late at night for a medical examination before being returned to the prison under tight security.
Special arrangements had also reportedly been put in place at the hospital in the event that his admission became necessary.
The development came after the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the immediate transfer of Imran to Shifa International Hospital for a comprehensive medical examination and treatment.
The government later challenged the Supreme Court’s order, terming the order discriminatory.
However, the Supreme Court registrar’s office returned the review petition after raising procedural objections.
In an interview with Reuters on Wednesday, PTI spokesperson Zulfikar Bukhari called the ruling a “new ray of hope” but said the party would proceed with a nationwide march on September 27 to demand access to Imran, speedy hearings in his cases and his release.
The 73-year-old former prime minister has been incarcerated since August 2023 due to convictions that he and his party claim were motivated by politics. He has been involved in several court proceedings since his removal in April 2022 due to a vote of no confidence.
