LAHORE: A protest rally organized by a faction of the Joint Action Committee Punjab University witnessed a poor response, with a large number of teachers and employees staying away from the demonstration.
The rally was organized over the non-payment of allowances to Punjab University employees. However, according to the organizers’ opponents, only five teachers facing corruption and disciplinary inquiries participated in the rally, while the majority of the teaching staff did not attend.
The Punjab University Officers Association, Librarians Association and Stenographers Association boycotted the protest rally. A faction of university employees also announced a boycott of the demonstration.
Meanwhile, PU Town-III affectees have appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to take notice of what they alleged was Rs6 billion corruption in Punjab University Town-III and order an impartial investigation.
Dr Khuram Shahzad said that Punjab University teachers and employees had been deprived of their plots even after nine years. He alleged that the Joint Action Committee had effectively become a “save corruption committee.”
The President of the Town-III affectees said that those allegedly involved in the Rs6 billion corruption were using the Joint Action Committee as a platform to protect their interests.
Dr Khuram Shahzad further alleged that a few teachers allegedly involved in billions of rupees in corruption were attempting to disturb the university environment.
Referring to the findings of a fact-finding committee, Dr Khurram Shahzad alleged that a contract worth Rs2.7 billion had been awarded without adopting a transparent procedure.
He also alleged that Dr Azhar Naeem had provided commercial land free of cost to a company owned by his real brother.
