KARACHI: Faculty of Civil Engineering & Architecture of Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology (SSUET), in collaboration with DHA Suffa University, organised the inaugural session of the 2nd International Conference on Sustainable & Smart Cities (ICSSC 2026), which served as a premier platform for academics, researchers, engineers, urban planners, and industry professionals to share their thoughts for creating smart and sustainable cities.
Speaking on the auspicious occasion, Chancellor of Sir Syed University, Akbar Ali Khan said smart cities focus on enhancing people’s lives while safeguarding our resources.
He noted that the true impact of research is realised when it transcends academic discourse to address real-world challenges.
Vice Chancellor SSUET, Prof Dr Afzal Haque said that sustainable and smart cities are no longer a distant vision; they have become an immediate necessity. As our cities expand rapidly, we are confronted with serious challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, rising energy demand, traffic congestion, and increasing pressure on infrastructure. Addressing these challenges demands not only innovative ideas but also practical and implementable solutions.
President, Institution of Engineers Pakistan, Engr Sohail Bashir, said that the next millennium will be defined by an era in which success will belong to those who can effectively conserve resources.
While financial wealth is valuable, it cannot resolve challenges without the necessary resources. The key to resource conservation lies in developing smart solutions, and one of the most promising approaches is the creation of smart cities.
Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering & Architecture, Prof Dr Mir Shabbar Ali, highlighted that the conference reflects our dedication to continuity, our commitment to growth, and our determination to make a meaningful contribution to the global discourse on sustainable and smart development worldwide.
Dean of Engineering & Applied Sciences of DHA Suffa University, Prof Dr Ahmed Hussain, said that sustainability poses significant challenges, particularly in managing resources for densely populated cities.
