Published Updated

The Pakistani rupee extended its marginal gains against the US dollar on Friday.

The local unit closed the day at 277.71, a gain of Re0.01 against the greenback.

On Thursday, the Pakistani rupee settled at 277.72 against the dollar.

Meanwhile, the US dollar rose slightly to 158.505 yen in the Asian morning, after gaining 0.4% on Thursday, putting it on course to rise around 0.7% this week.

Against the euro, the greenback edged up to $1.1521 after strengthening about 0.3% in the prior session.

The greenback also drew support from higher Treasury yields after a Financial Times report citing sources close to Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh pointed to the potential for a September interest rate hike, depending on incoming data.

The monthly US payrolls report, due later on Friday, could provide more clues on the Fed’s rate path.

Globally, oil prices continued to rise on Friday amid further concerns around the opening of the Strait of Hormuz as Iran, working with Oman, suggested banning vessels deemed hostile from the strait and heavily fining those ‌who violated the proposed rules..

Brent crude futures rose 99 cents, or 1.2%, to $83.48 a barrel by 0010 GMT.

US West Texas Intermediate futures rose 85 cents, or 1.1%, to $78.84.

Oil futures settled up at over $3 a barrel on Thursday as Iran reviewed a bill to ban US and Israeli vessels from the Strait of Hormuz.
