Weekly SPI surges nearly 1pc

ISLAMABAD: The persistent increase in fuel prices has further pushed up the Sensitive Price Index (SPI)-based weekly inflation, registering an increase of 0.91 percent largely due to notable upward trends in the prices of tomatoes 39.92 percent, diesel 15.87 percent, eggs 7.31 percent, and petrol 5.23 percent.

Weekly SPI-based inflation data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Friday showed further increases in the prices of several essential commodities, including potatoes by 3.70 percent, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by 0.91 percent, cooked daal by 0.72 percent, Lipton tea by 0.59 percent, mustard oil by 0.45 percent, garlic by 0.41 percent, cooked beef by 0.36 percent, and washing soap by 0.21 percent.

On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, the SPI recorded an increase of 9.66 percent, mainly driven by sharp rises in the prices of tomatoes (253.04 percent), onions (81.55 percent), wheat flour (74.13 percent), LPG (46.87 percent), diesel (31.92 percent), electricity charges for Q1 (22.79 percent), petrol (20.32 percent), mutton (16.02 percent), chilli powder (15.20 percent), beef (13.09 percent), bananas (12.06 percent), and plain bread (9.69 percent).

On a week-on-week basis, prices declined for chicken by 4.66 percent, bananas by 1.72 percent, pulse moong by 1.08 percent, pulse mash by 1.07 percent, Irri-6/9 rice by 0.52 percent, pulse masoor by 0.40 percent, sugar by 0.09 percent, and pulse gram by 0.03 percent.

According to the PBS, of the 51 items included in the SPI basket during the week, prices of 22 items (43.14 percent) increased, eight items (15.68 percent) declined, while the prices of 21 items (41.18 percent) remained unchanged.

On a YoY basis, the PBS reported notable declines in the prices of potatoes (32.69 percent), pulse gram (21.48 percent), sugar (17.67 percent), powdered salt (14.09 percent), chicken (13.73 percent), pulse masoor (13.55 percent), eggs (9.59 percent), and pulse moong (8.67 percent).
