LAHORE: Office-bearers of the Punjab University Town-III Affectees Association held an emergency press conference on Wednesday, alleging a multi-billion-rupee fraud in the university’s housing scheme and appealing to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to take notice.
Association President Dr. Khuram Shahzad and Secretary Dr. Shabbir Sarwar said a fact-finding committee had held Dr. Azhar Naeem responsible for the scandal, claiming his brother, a partner in the project’s developer company, received payments of Rs2.70 billion and was given commercial plots worth Rs6 billion free of cost.
They alleged the assets of Dr. Azhar Naeem, Dr. Sajid Rashid and others had grown by millions, while members’ plot files remained worthless and unsold in the market.
They said development work never began despite the absence of any stay order in the project’s first five years, and accused the management of diverting members’ deposits for personal gain. They demanded justice for nearly 1,000 affected families after a ten-year wait.
