KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has strongly condemned India’s unilateral attempt to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), calling it a reckless violation of international law, treaty obligations, and established norms governing trans boundary rivers.
The Chief Minister said that the Indus Waters Treaty is not a political arrangement that can be set aside at the whim of any government but a binding international agreement that has survived wars and decades of regional tensions. “India has no legal or moral authority to unilaterally suspend or abrogate the Treaty. Any attempt to weaponise water is unacceptable and threatens peace, stability, and the livelihood of millions of people in Pakistan,” he said.
Syed Murad Ali Shah said that the River Indus is the lifeline of Pakistan and the very soul of Sindh. “For thousands of years, Sindhu has nurtured our civilisation, our agriculture, our economy, and our identity. Any aggression against the waters of the Indus is an aggression against the people of Sindh and Pakistan.”
The Chief Minister said that the Pakistan Peoples Party has always stood as the strongest voice for the protection of Pakistan’s water rights. “From Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, and under the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari and Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the Pakistan Peoples Party has never compromised on issues affecting the rights of the federation and the people of Sindh.”
