LAHORE: With over 6,800 gatherings and 1,500 processions scheduled across the Gujranwala and Gujarat divisions for Muharram-ul-Haram, the Punjab government has finalised a massive security and civic blueprint, including the deployment of 19 companies of the Army and Rangers.

Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique approved the measures during an administrative meeting of the Gujranwala division on Saturday, ordering an immediate overhaul of sanitation, drainage, and street lighting along all procession routes. The meeting was attended by Commissioner of Gujranwala Division Muhammad Ali, RPO Khurram Shahzad Haider, Deputy Commissioner Naveed Ahmed, and CPO Dr Sardar Ghiyas Gul Khan, along with Additional Commissioner Coordination Khalid Arshad Mirza, ADCG Zeeshan Nadeem, ACR Muhammad Furqan, Director Local Government Qamar Zeeshan, MDG WMC Abdul Razaq Dogar, and other concerned officials. The Members of the Punjab Assembly from the Gujranwala and Gujarat divisions also attended the meeting to discuss the arrangements for Muharram processions and gatherings.

The Minister emphasised the importance of ensuring law and order, sanitation, drainage, street lighting, and other civic amenities during Muharram-ul-Haram, so that mourners do not face any difficulties. He directed relevant institutions to complete all arrangements along the routes of Muharram processions and gatherings promptly and to enhance communication between departments.

During the meeting, participants reviewed security, traffic management, cleanliness, emergency medical facilities, and other administrative matters related to Muharram. The Minister called for special arrangements to maintain cleanliness at procession and gathering sites, and for immediate resolution of sewage and street lighting issues.

On this occasion, the Commissioner informed the meeting that a comprehensive plan has been developed for the peaceful observance of Ashra Muharram across the division, with all relevant departments actively engaged in fulfilling their responsibilities.
