KARACHI: Sindh Food Minister Makhdoom Mehboob-uz-Zaman here on Sunday reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to ensuring the availability of safe, nutritious, and high-quality food for all citizens, describing food safety as a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of public health and sustainable development.
In a message issued on the occasion of World Food Safety Day, observed annually on June 7 under the auspices of the United Nations, the Food Minister said that safeguarding food quality remains a top priority of the Sindh government and that no compromise would be tolerated in matters concerning public health.
“Access to safe and quality food is the basic right of every citizen. Ensuring food safety is not only essential for protecting public health but for strengthening economic productivity and social well-being,” he said.
The minister warned that the government would continue its crackdown on food adulteration and the sale of substandard food products, adding that enforcement operations against those endangering public health would be further intensified across the province.
“Strict legal action will continue against adulteration mafias and all elements involved in the production, distribution, or sale of unsafe food. Protecting consumers from harmful and substandard products is our collective responsibility,” he added.
Makhdoom emphasized that food safety must be ensured at every stage of the supply chain, from agricultural production and processing to transportation, storage, retail, and final consumption.
He noted that adherence to internationally recognized food safety standards is critical to preventing food-borne illnesses and strengthening consumer confidence.
The minister said that safe food is a prerequisite for a healthy society and a resilient economy, stressing that investments in food safety contribute to improved public health outcomes, reduced healthcare costs, and enhanced economic growth.
He urged citizens, food producers, retailers, and relevant stakeholders to work together in promoting food safety practices and creating greater public awareness regarding the consumption of hygienic and quality-assured food products.
Highlighting the government’s ongoing efforts, he said that under the leadership and vision of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, the provincial administration is implementing comprehensive measures to strengthen food regulation, improve monitoring mechanisms, and ensure the availability of safe food for all segments of society.
He further stated that the Sindh Food Department would continue advancing initiatives aimed at food security, consumer protection, and public welfare in line with the public-service agenda of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Referring to the significance of World Food Safety Day, the minister said the occasion serves as a global reminder of the shared responsibility of governments, businesses, academia, and consumers in preventing food-related risks and promoting healthier communities.
“Food safety is everyone’s responsibility. By working together, we can reduce the incidence of food-borne diseases, protect public health, and build a safer and healthier future for coming generations,” he said.
World Food Safety Day is observed worldwide each year to raise awareness about food safety challenges, encourage preventive measures against food-borne diseases, and promote coordinated efforts to ensure that food remains safe throughout the supply chain.
