LAHORE: The Oil Marketing Association of Pakistan (OMAP) has urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to convene an urgent meeting to address the deepening financial and operational crisis facing the country’s downstream petroleum sector.
In a formal letter, OMAP Chairman Tariq Wazir Ali warned that unresolved industry receivables, pending price differential claims, foreign exchange losses, delayed margin revisions, and rising business costs are severely straining the sector’s liquidity and long-term viability.
The association also raised alarm over the growing circulation of smuggled and undocumented petroleum products, which it said is undermining fair competition and causing significant losses to both legitimate businesses and the national exchequer.
The OMAP cautioned against additional taxation in the upcoming federal budget, warning that mounting fiscal pressures discourage investment in a sector vital to Pakistan’s energy security. The association called for immediate stakeholder consultation to develop a balanced and sustainable policy framework.
