PM Shehbaz wants to generate power from solid waste
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered a comprehensive roadmap to generate electricity from solid waste, aiming to modernize waste management, reduce fuel imports, and promote renewable energy nationwide.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday ordered the development of a comprehensive roadmap to generate electricity from solid waste, as part of efforts to modernise waste management and promote renewable energy in the country.
Chairing a high-level meeting on solid waste management, the prime minister directed the formation of a dedicated task force to propose a detailed strategy for energy production from solid waste.
The prime minister said the initiative would be implemented nationwide, in collaboration with provincial governments, including the federal capital, Islamabad.
“The task force will develop recommendations based on modern technologies and international best practices,” Sharif said, adding that the panel should include experts from the private sector as well as internationally renowned specialists.

Sharif highlighted that producing electricity from solid waste would help reduce the country’s dependence on imported fuel, thereby saving valuable foreign exchange.
He also said that improved waste management systems could significantly reduce the country’s carbon footprint. “Promoting environmentally friendly and renewable energy sources for sustainable development is among the government’s top priorities,” the prime minister said.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik, and Minister for Power Awais Leghari.
Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah and Muhammad Ali, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Privatisation and Chairman of the Privatisation Commission of Pakistan, were also present, along with senior officials from relevant departments.
The directives from the prime minister come amid growing concerns over the country’s energy security and the environmental impact of poor solid waste management.
Experts say that converting waste into electricity could provide a dual benefit: reducing landfill use and contributing to the national energy supply.
