Maryam accords approval to design of Gujranwala Mass Transit System

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the design of the Gujranwala Mass Transit System.

The CM directed that every area of Gujranwala be connected to the metro train through feeder buses. To ease traffic flow, it has been decided to construct two tunnel sections in the project, while in-principle approval has been granted for 17 to 19 kilometres of the transit line to run underground.

It was further decided that solar systems will be installed at every station and depot.

The decisions were taken during a meeting chaired by the chief minister, where a detailed briefing was presented.

The mass transit system will have the capacity to facilitate travel for 2.6 million passengers in Gujranwala. Spanning 31.5 kilometres from Gakhar to Aimanabad, the project has been assigned a completion timeline of 12 months. A total of 24 stations will be constructed, including two underground stations. Depots will be established at Gharjakh, Chand Da Qila and Gondlanwala. Additionally, a 62-kilometre-long drainage system will be developed along both sides of the transit corridor. A dedicated command and control centre will also be set up for the project.

The chief minister said the Gujranwala Mass Transit System would transform the city’s transport culture and serve as a modern, efficient commuting facility for its residents.
