Stocks show strong recovery

Published Updated

KARACHI: Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) staged a powerful and confidence-restoring rebound on Tuesday, as aggressive value buying in heavyweight sectors helped the PSX recover sharply from the previous session’s historic rout, signaling a decisive shift in market sentiment from panic to opportunity.

The benchmark KSE-100 Index climbed 5,159.10 points or 3.39 percent to close at 157,132.10 points, compared with 151,973.00 points a day earlier. During the session, the index slipped to an intraday low of 151,258.86 points in early trade, reflecting lingering caution, before staging a steady climb to hit a high of 158,217.01 points as buying momentum strengthened.

The BRIndex100 advanced 475.52 points or 2.77 percent to close at 17,616.22 points, with a total volume of 631.85 million shares. The BRIndex30 rose 359.41 points or 0.58 percent to settle at 61,905.34 points, recording turnover of 443.09 million shares.

According to Topline Securities the market witnessed a confident comeback after the previous session’s heavy sell-off. The brokerage house observed that early weakness dragged the index to an intraday low of 714 points in negative territory, but buyers quietly returned as investors reassessed the geopolitical situation and grew confident that tensions were unlikely to prolong. As sentiment shifted from fear to opportunity, value hunters stepped in to accumulate fundamentally strong stocks at attractive levels.

Topline highlighted that index-heavy names including Fauji Fertilizer Company (FFC), United Bank Limited (UBL), Engro Holdings (ENGROH), Meezan Bank Limited (MEBL), and Mari Energies (MARI) spearheaded the rally, collectively contributing approximately 2,753 points to the overall index gain.

Monday’s record-breaking plunge had dragged the market down by more than 16,000 points.

Trading activity remained elevated, underlining continued investor engagement. Total turnover in the ready market stood at 770.70 million shares, slightly lower than the previous session’s 809.55 million shares, while traded value amounted to approximately Rs44.36 billion compared with Rs48.51 billion a day earlier.

Despite the marginal decline in volumes, the improved breadth and price recovery suggested that the session was driven more by selective accumulation rather than forced selling.

Market capitalization rebounded to approximately Rs17.63 trillion from Rs17.19 trillion in the previous session, restoring nearly Rs446 billion in value and partially offsetting Monday’s massive erosion.

Out of 480 traded companies in the ready segment, 213 closed in positive territory, 228 declined, and 39 remained unchanged, reflecting a significantly healthier participation profile compared to the across-the-board declines witnessed earlier.

Among the most actively traded stocks in the ready market, K-Electric Limited led volumes with 74.40 million shares and closed at Rs7.29. WorldCall Telecom followed with 50.05 million shares, closing at Rs1.21, while Pak Elektron Limited traded 38.23 million shares and settled at Rs39.33.

On the gainers’ side, PIA Holding Company Limited-B surged by Rs1,189.00 to close at Rs17,689.00, while Rafhan Maize Products Company Limited rose by Rs189.76 to settle at Rs9,078.66. Meanwhile, Khyber Textile Mills Limited declined by Rs105.21 to Rs1,318.57, and Ismail Industries Limited fell by Rs86.25 to Rs1,813.75.

Sectoral BR indices also closed firmly in the green. The BR Automobile Assembler Index gained 2.01 percent to 24,071.43 points, the BR Cement Index rose 3.01 percent to 11,075.53 points, and the BR Commercial Banks Index advanced 3.57 percent to 55,368.59 points.

The BR Power Generation and Distribution Index climbed 4.17 percent to 25,878.36 points, the BR Oil and Gas Index added 3.15 percent to 12,983.70 points, and the BR Tech & Communication Index increased 2.19 percent to close at 3,227.97 points.

Analysts say Tuesday’s session represented a decisive psychological turnaround for the PSX. The swift restoration of nearly half a trillion rupees in market capitalization, combined with strong buying in banking, fertilizer, energy, cement, and power stocks, underscored the resilience of institutional participation.

While short-term volatility cannot be ruled out given evolving geopolitical and macroeconomic dynamics, the robust rebound suggests that the broader market foundation remains intact and that investors are willing to capitalize on fundamentally attractive valuations after extreme corrections.
